Long Description:
Growth hormone (GH), also known as somatotropin, is a hormone that stimulates growth, cell reproduction and regeneration. It is synthesized, stored, and secreted by the somatotroph cells within the lateral wings of the anterior pituitary gland and is stored in secretary granules. GH is released in a pulsatile manner by the combined actions of the hypothalamic hormones GHRH and SST as well as other factors (1). Several biological actions in the immune system are controlled by GH including enhancing thymopoiesis and T cell development, modulating cytokine production, enhancing B cell development and antibody production, priming neutrophils and monocytes for superoxide anion secretion, enhancing neutrophil adhesion and monocyte migration and anti-apoptotic action (2). In addition, GH can act directly on various cell types to induce lipolysis, lactation, amino acid uptake and protein synthesis (3-4).
