Background:
The Period family of proteins are negative regulators of the circadian clock. The CLOCK-BMAL1 heterodimer is an activator of circadian gene transcription. PER2 (Period circadian protein homolog 2), a member of the Period family of proteins, binds to CLOCK and inhibits its transcriptional activity.
